Q&A: Can Your PBRs Grow Diatoms?

How Diatoms Grow In Our PBRs?
Our algae photobioreactors are perfect for growing diatoms. Diatoms are knows for their fast growth rate. In traditional algae culture, this means they often limit themselves of nutrients. By doing so the culture ends up crashing. This is one of the most inconsistent things about culturing diatoms. Because of this, diatoms have traditionally been grown in batch.
Industrial Plankton’s PBRs have so much automation and control, we are able to:
  • Keep nutrients replete
  • Monitor density in real-time
  • Match the diatom’s growth rate

Not only can we get more production out of the diatoms, because we have all of this automation, we can also maintain higher densities for longer. Another benefit of this automation is that it gives us the ability to continuously harvest the diatoms.

Most kinds of commonly aquaculture diatoms grow extremely well in the bioreactor:

  • thalassiosira weissflogii
  • thalassiosira pseudonana
  • chaetoceros muelleri
  • chaetoceros calcitrans

Now you know that our algae PBRs can grow diatoms 🙂
