DEEP BAY MARINE STATION

Algae Team Tour

The Industrial Plankton production team took a break from building photobioreactors to visit the Deep Bay Marine Station. The Station is a marine biological research facility operated by Vancouver Island University’s Centre for Shellfish. The station supports coastal and marine research activities related to: sustainable shellfish aquaculture; preservation of coastal ecosystems; and inter-disciplinary projects involving local communities.

The faculty led our team on a tour of their facility to provide us with details on their microalgae production methods for their shellfish aquaculture research. As a University facility, they had significant insight on numerous algae species and their associated challenges. In addition, we discussed their recent change to LED illuminated cultures from fluorescent lights to improve growth efficiency.

We always take the opportunity to visit and gain first-hand knowledge from those institutions who are directly involved in large scale microalgae production to ensure our product is optimized for the consumer’s needs. We would like to thank those at the Field Station for taking the time for the tour. More information about the station can be found here: https://www2.viu.ca/deepbay/ We look forward to returning the favour and hosting the staff at our production facility for a tour. After all, the Station is only a couple hours north or Victoria.
